Statement
How do Korean and English language and culture interact through art? My investigation explores the similarities and differences between the two cultures integral to my identity. Each of my works is connected to an English idiom and a piece of Korean culture, either another idiom, art style, object, or food. I have explored this idea through the mediums oil paint and printmaking. I have experimented with combinations of materials from beads and canvas to colored pencil and prints. I strive to use art to showcase how Korean and English cultures and language can interact and mesh together. Ideas and words that seem completely different and have no connection on paper can come together through my art. My work Sticky Fingers helped me solidify my investigation by including Korean influences. Before this painting, I was planning on simply portraying English idioms through art. This work also helped me realize that to include Korean culture I do not have to find a similar idiom and can look elsewhere for connections. There does not have to be an exact phrase that translates to both languages for them to interact.
